Is heavy rock light listening for you? Do you miss the days when any true fan of a band knew the lead singer, lead guitarist, bass player, and drummer’s name, age, and rank amongst other musicians? Do you look around and worry about the next generation because they don’t know Def Leppard, Kix, Nordic Union, Billy Idol, Hell’s Addiction, and The Darkness?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above, Steven Michael and his co-host, Sonny “Hollywood” Pooni, have created the perfect podcast for you. Growin’ Up Rock “focuses mainly on taking a trip down memory lane and getting involved in stories and memories about growing up around rock and roll, particularly guitar-focused rock and roll.” Michael and Pooni talk through their own memories from the golden-age of rock and invite listeners and artists to tell their stories as well, creating an amazing mashup of close encounters, live concerts, and music that never dies.
In the midst of these music fans and idols, Michael also adds a professional knowledge to the show, having worked as a tour manager, production manager, and guitar technician for around fifteen years. This “insider’s view” drives the pair of podcasters beyond just hanging out and discussing music with other fans.
I’m really concerned about the next generation coming up and where they’re going to learn about hard rock and metal.
So Pooni and Michael are slowly including more and more episodes that educate younger listeners- or older listeners that missed the 70s, 80s, and 90s rock scene -about the bands that shaped the genre, as well as up-and-coming bands like Greta Van Fleet (episode 4) and even newer artists who are just now releasing their first albums.
Sonny and Steven interview major musicians, new people on the scene, and the people who lived during the golden days of heavy rock and metal to create a show that any fan would love and any newcomer must check out in order to enter the scene with the confidence of a true rock legend.
Michael suggests people always go back and check out at least the first three episodes of the show, where he and Sonny explain who they are and what they want the show to be, but also lists these as his favorite episodes: The Dead Daisies Interview, Ballad to Bombastic, Under the Influence of the Stones, and Steve Stevens Interview.
