Lachlan is a graduate of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He majored in International Relations and History with a focus on Cambodia, Human Rights and Genocide. Upon first learning about the Khmer Rouge as a teenager, Lachlan became fascinated with the period and its tragic events. A regular visitor to the country, he was able to focus on the topic at university and eventually complete a thesis which dealt with the persecution of minorities under the Pol Pot regime and events taking place in Myanmar. Following this he worked with the Documentation Centre of Cambodia in the 'Genocide Education Program' at the end of 2018.​He currently lives with his partner Holly and their five cats. He is an avid fan of Tottenham Hotspur football club.
