In one of his craziest strings of social media posts yet — and that’s saying a lot — Donald Trump blurted out this morning that he is levying a 50% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum, in response to Ontario’s 25% tariff on electricity exported to three US states.
“CANADA IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” proclaimed Trump — in ALL CAPS, of course.
This, like most of Trump's blathering, is a complete lie. Until he launched his trade war, most Canada-US trade was ENTIRELY TARIFF FREE (in all caps, two can PLAY THIS GAME!), under the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement Trump himself negotiated and signed in his first term.
You know, the agreement he trumpeted at the time as “the greatest trade deal in history.”
Trump then went on at length in his posts about the absorption of Canada into the US.
“The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World,” he said.
This is madness, on multiple levels....
