Stillness is not synonymous with modern life. And that's a problem for mental, emotional and physical reasons. To be calmer, and show more authority, Rob suggests learning to sit still.

Listen for three practical examples.

(And yes, this is longer than 2 minutes, but for good reason...)

Transcript:

Sit on a train, bus or plane
Watch people walking down the footpath in town
Or just go anywhere frankly
And you’ll see people busy, busy, busy.
Busy walking fast, checking their Device or going somewhere.
Busy buying stuff, booking stuff, or organising stuff.
Usually, they’re head down, on pace with intention written all over their face.
There are a few people who seem to have their heads up looking around.
Walking more slowly.
Or sitting doing nothing.
A few.
Given that our modern world promotes
Busy, options and things
There’s a risk we can get caught up in a whirlwind of activity
And miss the peace, beauty and insights of the moment.
The sheer options and pace of modern life
Prevent us from being comfortable with doing little or nothing.
We miss the stunning beauty of the morning sunrise
Because we’re rushing to get up, get dressed, get fed and get out the door.
We miss the opportunity to reflect for a moment on the craziness of the shopping mall and what that may be doing to us.
Because we’re caught up in navigating the shops, sales and hordes of people.
We miss the chance to just walk more slowly and breathe better.
Because you can’t relax if you’re walking fast, checking your phone and moving straight on to the next appointment.
Some of us can’t handle the quiet.
We have to fill up every moment of the day doing stuff.
Why?
Maybe it’s because we’re scared of having to reflect. Or ponder. Or just be.
Because maybe we’re scared of what we’ll find.
What will come to us.
Try this today: become more comfortable with quiet.
Instead of crossing the instant the lights go green, wait for the next one. And just notice what’s going on around you.
Or, instead of parking your car at the supermarket and rushing in, sit there for two minutes and relax, breathe and enjoy.
Or, instead of getting home and flicking on the TV, sit there looking out the window for 5 minutes with a good cuppa.
Ahhhhh.....
Remember, it’s not just the quantity of life you get that matters
It’s the quality you create too.
(Today took longer than 2 mins. But that’s OK. Because sometimes, good things take a little longer...)
