Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton play a pair of vampires who have been married for hundreds of years in Jim Jarmusch’s latest film, Only Lovers Left Alive. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you never aged, if you had time to master every instrument and fulfill all your dreams? Or would you be consumed by the monotony of a never-ending existence and a lack of new, life-changing discoveries? Scott and Adam will discuss those issues and many more aspects of the film in the Main Event.
In the opening segment of this episode, your hosts take a look at the micro-budget horror film The Battery. Two minor league baseball players find themselves traveling through a zombie-filled wasteland in search of other survivors. The obstacles they encounter along the way test their friendship and loyalty. If zombies and existential angst sounds a little too heavy for you, Scott also recommends a road trip comedy currently available on Netflix Instant.
During Collector’s Corner, your hosts discuss the Criterion Collection release of Sweet Smell of Success. This black and white film from the 1950s stars Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and has long been known as having one of the finest screenplays ever written. Set in a cesspool of gossip columnists, unscrupulous publicists and crooked cops, Sweet Smell of Success still resonates as much today as it did when it was released over 50 years ago.
