Best piece of career advice I can give is: Fix the lifestyle you want. Then work backwards from there. I'll get into how to actually answer the question, but first I'll explain why it's important to answer this question in this form. The problem with career planning, is that most people focus on the wrong properties when making professional decisions. They either ask vague questions about the nature of the work — “is this my passion?”; “is this what I want to do with my life?” — or they sidestep this ambiguity by optimizing ego metrics — “what pays the most?”; “what would be most impressive to my old high school friends?” Neither of these strategies work well. The problem with the first approach is...   Questions to help yourself define the lifestyle you want:

• How much control do I have over my schedule?
• What’s the intensity level of my job?
• What’s the importance of what I do?
• What’s the prestige level?
• What type of work?
• Where do I live?
• What’s my social life like?
• What’s my work life balance?
• What’s my family like?
• How do other people think of me?
• What am I known for?
