From the invention of the Gutenberg press in the 15th century to mechanised looms in the 18th century, changes to labour markets, engendered by new technologies, are often accompanied by moral panic. These historical concerns are mirrored now: emerging AI and automation will have a wide-ranging impact on the place of work. At a time when we have inflation and a cost of living crisis, economic uncertainty impacting labour markets, coupled with the need for green jobs and industry, where does our future lie? ‘Forecast’ 2023 symposium, City Hall, LondonFrom myths and fairy tales to sci-fi dystopias, stories have preoccupied humans since the dawn of time. They help us navigate adversity and create an imaginative space for future action. Storytellers connect us to new perspectives, enabling us to learn and make sense of our changing world. At this uncertain moment, we explore stories that resist the urge for simplistic solutions to the huge challenges facing us. The world is complex and our stories need to be too. So much of what we read is presented as the definitive truth, when in fact our world and its future is full of multiple interrelated factors and nuance.Forecast is an international symposium by Invisible Dust, featuring world-leading scientists, writers, artists and cultural commentators discussing the role of storytelling to navigate global challenges.Hear from writer Ben Okri and mythical author and artist of ‘Storyland’ Amy Jeffs, artists Julie Freeman, Samson Kambalu, Melanie Manchot, Raqs Media Collective and Gavin Turk, UCL scientists Prof. Mark Maslin, Prof. Priti Parikh, and Caroline Edwards and journalist Aaron Bastani. With the support of Chairs, broadcaster and presenter Bidisha Mamata, filmmaker David Malone, John Newbigin OBE and writer Dr Cleo Roberts-Komireddi.Forecast 2023 was commissioned by the Royal Docks Team and UCL (University College London) and supported by the Mayor of London.https://invisibledust.com/https://invisibledust.com/projects/forecast-2023/https://www.instagram.com/invisible_dust/https://www.facebook.com/InvisibleDust/https://vimeo.com/user54715069/ Hosted on Acast.
