What is character development really? Why is it such a common phenomenon? Is it a rite of passage in dating?

Let's just say I'm exploring a different perspective to the topic. Don't get me wrong, I'll always encourage people to choose themselves if they feel unappreciated but why is this a staple in today’s relationships?
