A white girl and a black guy talk about race and racism from the inside-out.
In this episode, I talk to Rob Cook (bio below) about race and racism and how his view of both has been changing and evolving throughout his life, from when he was growing up in the housing projects of Birmingham, Alabama through his time in the US Air Force to the moment he came across the Inside-Out understanding of 3 Principles.
We talk about:
- how Rob's aunts impacted his view of racism
- how hate is a learnt behaviour
- being stopped by a cop on his way to work and the impact it had on him
- why did he decide to join the military
- how his training and time in military changes his view of race and racism
- how the environment influenced his friendship with his white companion and a friend in and outside of a military setting
- why communicating from the place of anger isn't working
- why the focus on what's universal vs what is personal should be the basis for any difficult conversations
- what does "black lives matter" mean
- what do I mean when I say "I don't see colour"
- the impact of George's death
- why do we need tragic moments to wake up and see life and people differently
- how to talk about racism and any "difficult" subject
- what happens when we drop our opinions
