Students will study the complex meaning of the essay, “A Modest Proposal”, written by Jonathan Swift, to acquire a better understanding of the genre of satire and its use to persuade others. After reading and analyzing the essay, as well as a contemporary example of satire, students will write their own satirical essay based on a present-day societal topic of their choice.
