You can learn how we got to containers as the default way to run applications efficiently and how Kubernetes changed the container orchestration game.

Robert and Lew talk about the fundamentals of container function and how they simplify the process of breaking up large monolithic applications into smaller, more manageable pieces called microservices. This approach allows for easier maintenance, improved security, and greater resiliency. Containers allow for better segregation and isolation of these microservices, reducing the impact of any failures. Further, microservices can be built by different development teams, and each can have its environment and resources. Docker revolutionized how people thought about containers, making it easier to package the necessary libraries and tools to build containers and greatly simplified container deployment.

Even as containers were becoming more popular, a piece needed to be added. Tools like Amazon's EC2 and VMware's virtual machines formalized the process of running virtual machines, and something similar was needed to manage the lifecycle of containers. To date, Kubernetes was the orchestration system that quickly took the lead. It can monitor a 'fleet' of containers, restart failed ones, and scale groups of containers up or down according to application needs. In addition, Kubernetes also has API-enabled controllers to manage versions and deployments. This provides an extra layer of automation, making deploying individual, containerized applications easier for developers.

Join Robert and Lew for part 2 of 3 where they dive deeper into the value of Kubernetes for developers and operators.
