Andrew is a writer, audio producer, editor and teacher, who, in this episode, reflects on his love for writing and his lifelong journey with audio. This ranges from his experimentation with tape recorders as a child, through to his experience in college radio and his role as host and producer of the arts-and-culture podcast The Organist, working with KCRW in Los Angeles. Andrew then shares the story of how he came to write his first book, The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight, and how that has led him to be featured as a guest in various podcasts.Podcast case study: Parallel (https://www.relay.fm/parallel) (guest)Find Andrew at andrewleland.org (https://www.andrewleland.org).Read a transcript of the episode as a styled PDF (https://martinfeld.files.wordpress.com/2024/03/2024-03-really-specific-stories-transcript-e28094-andrew-leland.pdf) or in plain text (https://assets.fireside.fm/file/fireside-images/podcasts/transcripts/c/c67dadf4-8798-4528-8e7d-e45b83c1d218/episodes/d/d5c2fd74-269b-4a84-af7d-3a977ea5e53c/transcript.txt).Links and Show NotesLeft the Lens Cap On 00:00:00Campus radio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campus_radio)Internet radio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_radio)The Organist (https://www.theorganist.org)KCRW (https://www.kcrw.com)Compact disc (CD) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_disc)This American Life (https://www.thisamericanlife.org/688/the-out-crowd)Camcorder (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camcorder)Conversation and Narrative 00:05:48Desktop publishing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_publishing)Cable television (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_television)Tape recorder (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tape_recorder)Joe Frank (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Frank)Paraliterature (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraliterature)Shotgun microphone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone#Shotgun)Writing 00:14:34The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight (2023) (https://www.andrewleland.org/2023/10/book/) by Andrew LelandThe New Yorker (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Yorker)DeafBlind Communities May Be Creating a New Language of Touch (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/annals-of-inquiry/deafblind-communities-may-be-creating-a-new-language-of-touch) by Andrew LelandAccessibility Sprinkles 00:20:59Visual impairment (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_impairment) (including more precise references to blindness and low vision)Screen reader (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_reader)Accessibility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) and more specifically, computer accessibility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_accessibility) and Web accessibility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_accessibility)Parallel (https://www.relay.fm/parallel)Shelly Brisbin (https://www.brisbin.net/)Find Andrew's guest appearance in #86: An Immigrant in the Country of the Blind (https://www.relay.fm/parallel/86).Louis Braille (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Braille)Hacker (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker)Braille (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braille)Extended reality (XR) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_reality) (including more precise references to augmented, mixed and virtual reality)It Feels Like a Gift 00:29:33Liminality (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liminality)Ryan Knighton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Knighton)CreditsRecorded and edited by Martin Feld, using Audio Hijack (https://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/) and Ferrite Recording Studio (https://www.wooji-juice.com/products/ferrite/)Martin’s edit in Ferrite https://martinfeld.files.wordpress.com/2024/03/2024-03-really-specific-stories-andrew-leland-ferrite-timeline-screenshot.jpegOriginal podcast theme music by Alex Canion (https://www.alexcanion.com)ContactWebsite: rsspod.net (https://www.rsspod.net)Email: martin@loungeruminator.net (mailto:martin@loungeruminator.net)Mastodon: social.lol/@martinfeld (https://social.lol/@martinfeld)Micro.blog: micro.blog/martinfeld (https://micro.blog/martinfeld)
