It is a basic principle of international law that legal wrongs entail State responsibility, in particular to make reparations. Yet, the principles and practice of responsibility for colonization and slavery remain contested. In this third session, we will examine current international legal rules in relation to the past and ongoing wrongs of colonization and slavery, as well as shed light on ongoing efforts to develop law and practice in this area. This will be set against an exploration of these wrongs and their continuing impacts and effects. This session will also engage with Special Rapporteur Achiume's recent report on the obligations of UN Member States to provide reparations for diverse forms of racial discrimination rooted in slavery and colonialism.
