How do you scale up?
Kyle Racki, CEO of Proposify, a software-as-a-service company has lived through this scenario, and brought his hard-won experience to my podcast recently.
“Simply adding people to a product team doesn't help,” said Racki.
Nor does the traditional waterfall (or bottleneck) approach where product designers come up with the ideas and hand it off to the engineering team to build and they get QA to test it.
Instead, Racki took a page from big companies like Spotify and adopted a squad structure.
The squad structure is a scalable process. Smaller teams work together on different parts of your product and different features. Each squad serves a different purpose, but each contains a product person, two engineers, and a QA.
