Today's build method is insulated concrete formwork (ICF). Your host Jeanette Oates discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using this material in your very own self-build project. Hear the pros and cons of Solid blocks (polystyrene) and Durosole blocks (wood chips) and how you too, can DIY with these easy to use build materials.

“Making self-build simple”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Two sorts of ICF

  1. Solid blocks with insulation on both the interior and exterior (polystyrene)
  2. Durasole - bricks made of wood chips and portland cement - similar hollow constructions with space for concrete to be poured. This is more environmentally friendly.

Advantages

  • Whichever one you choose to use in your self-build you can get training and you can do this totally DIY on site.
  • It's quicker than standard bricks, they're breeze blocks size so easier to scale up.
  • They are not so affected by the cold as the insulation is already poured either side of the ICF blocks.
  • Fairly easy to understand how to put them together.
  • Insulation is good with both internal and external filling, ensuring they are airtight.
  • Any exterior finish can be applied to both these methods and they can be shaped into curves.
  • Meets high standards for installation and provide great soundproofing for rooms such as basements.

Disadvantages

  • Insulation pour needs to be done very carefully.
  • Need manual ventilation as the seal can be so good it's too airtight.
  • Can be more expensive material wise, however, the installation is quicker so this can be off-set on the build cost.
