Common Threads (2023)

Common Threads is a collection of audio and video emanations, inspired by daily encounters from the city streets (cables, private generators, phone sounds, smoke), and sourced from various Whatsapp groups used by Beiruti neighbors to discuss common generators, power cuts, energy supply, and other highly charged matters.

The outcome is a series of stop-motion and collage animation videos, an audio piece created through a collection of mechanical sounds and sayings culled from the Whatsapp group conversations, and a sculptural object, casually placed amongst other organic street objects. The series of interventions becomes another rendering of the now, and perhaps a fragment of future relics.

The video works were done in collaboration with Sateحanimations, and the sound piece with Sary Moussa (Tunefork Studios).

Nesrine Khodr is a visual artist living and working in Beirut. Her work engages with various media, primarily film, performance, and installation. Her practice tackles themes that pertain to language, landscape, and social histories. She conceived, produced, and directed a weekly cultural show for television (2008-2013), recording voice-overs, performing in various art pieces and feature films, and as a dramaturg for performance-based projects.
