Facebook is making pages and accounts with a huge number of followers more transparent in an effort to make ensure users that its services are authentic. You will now know the physical location of ultra-popular Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts.

The Menlo Park tech giant stated, “We’re piloting this feature in the US, starting specifically with Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts that are based outside the US but reach large audiences based primarily in the US.”

Once the feature goes into effect, the actual location of these accounts will be publicly available. That way, before people go sharing their posts, they can form a more accurate opinion of the content’s reliability and authenticity.

This concept isn’t new. In 2018, Facebook had already started giving the country and other user information regarding the people that run a page. Around the same time, they had also introduced the ‘About This Account’ feature on Instagram.

Additionally, Facebook has taken a number of steps since the 2016 US Presidential poll to ensure security and prevent misinformation, so, this new action is basically the next step in a plan to make the services more transparent.

I definitely think this is a good thing for Facebook to do. It’s 2020, after all, and this kind of move is exactly what a social network of the modern age needs to do to stay relevant and maintain its competitiveness.

As we all become more and more connected, the accuracy of information becomes more and more important. Now, more than ever, it’s critical to know who’s who and what’s what.
