The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – By Mark Twain

THE RACONTEUSE IS LIVE- SEASON 1

Welcome to the first official season of The Raconteuse Is Live

About the Book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer :

Those who don’t know, this was an 1876 novel by Mark Twain about a boy growing up along the Mississippi River and his adventures with his friends. Well recognised as the masterpiece of American literature and one of the first novels to be written on a typewriter, the book was originally a commercial failure and yet it was the bestselling work of Twain’s life.

The story is about Tom Sawyer who is smart, witty, mischievous, adventurous and can be often found along with his friend Huckleberry Finn. It is set in the 1840s in the town of St. Petersburg, which is based on Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived as a boy. The novel has elements of humour, satire and social criticism – features that later made Mark Twain one of the most important authors of American literature. Mark Twain describes some autobiographical events in the book. The novel's setting of St. Petersburg is based on Twain's actual boyhood home of Hannibal, near St. Louis, and many of the places in it are real and today support a tourist industry as a result.

About the Author, Mark Twain:

Samuel Clemens, also known as Samuel Langhorne Clemens often known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. To many he was the "greatest humorist the United States has produced" and to some "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn of which the latter of has often been called the "Great American Novel".

Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, he served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. Later he became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. His humorous story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well, dying the day after the comet made its closest approach to Earth.
