As the way we communicate and entertain ourselves has changed, as inequality has risen, how has our sense of community been affected? And now, faced with a pandemic which will certainly change our communities for good or ill, what does history tell us, and what does the emerging evidence suggest, about whether we're likely to respond by looking outward or inward?
