This is going to surprise some of you. It is going to delight some of you too. But I think at the end of me talking it's going to delight everyone. I wanted to talk about this grape called Cabernet Dorsa. Have you had this? It's an amazing and I think highly underrated grape. The Cabernet Dorsas I've had have been so delicious. So transformative. They're the kind of grapes that remind you why you love wine.

So for those of you that haven't had the fortune of trying this wonderful grape, it's a dark skinned variety that originated in Germany. It came out of a grape breeding institution. That's pretty cool. Those people knew what they were doing. You can probably guess the parents. Or at least one of them. Cabernet Sauvignon, and Dornfelder. That's where the German heritage comes from. Dornfelder is a German grape that ALSO came from the same breeding institute. And Dornfelder's parents were also created there. 

There's a lot of deliberate breeding going on here. And the result is Cabernet Dorsa. Are you seeing how cool this is? Keep in mind it's not a hybrid grape. It was crossed from Vitis Vinifera grapes all the way up. These grapes are hardy in the winter, so that only adds to their appeal. 

You won't see tons of Cab Dorsa out there. In Germany it's relatively popular. But in California (I'm from California) it's not really that much. Thankfully one of my favorite wineries in Paso Robles, Castoro, happens to have a brilliant Cabernet Dorsa. That's how I came to know and love this grape. So you should be able to track one down. If you find it, consider yourself lucky. 

There's not a lot else to say about Cab Dorsa. It's a pretty newish grape, when you consider the history of some of these other ones out there. I mean it was created in 1971. Give it time. It can go places. But it needs your help. Talk to your local winery and or grocer about Cabernet Dorsa today.
