With this episode, the podcast got more complicated. Instead of exploring and critiquing influencer culture, the host announced that she is going to become an influencer herself. Hmm.I liked the point that she made that Venz Box is under-appreciated as a tech innovator because her clients are mostly women. But Piazza seems to be arguing that because a tiny percentage of social media influencers are successful (some are even millionaires!), this development is a way for women to self-empower. To me, that's the same as saying that because a few supermodels are wealthy, devoting yourself to personal aesthetics is a way for women to self-empower. In both cases, less than 1% of women are born with what it takes to succeed, and this argument ignores SO MUCH. To me, aspiring to social media influencer status feels like joining a cargo cult, with the same potential to damage people as any other cult.
