Professionally, I’m a licensed counselor for past twenty years, I’ve worked in mental health and substance fields working with women, children and families in various residential and nonresidential capacities. I work full time at the department of human services with kids who commit various crimes including murder, sex offenders, to small or large theft charges to name a few. I’ve always created amazing plans for them to get treatment and wrap around services when they get home, but the mothers were so broken and an emotional hot mess with little support. They were stuck, embarrassed, don’t have confidants to talk to about the delicate issues with their children. I would find myself talking to them for hours, holding space for them to cry and get things off their chest, deescalate them, encourage them etc. Unfraternally my job is not to treat the parents but the children.
