If you think you are in the wrong job, going down a wrong path but knows in your heart that it's too late to shift courses now, you need to stop listening to your heart and start listening to my podcast guest today who left everything behind that no longer made sense to him, and started exploring what he really wanted to do.Lucky for us, he wanted to do Coding and that is why he is my guest today.Denis Tsoiis a former precious metal traders in Hong Kong, moved here since 2010 right after the global financial crisis, who worked tirelessly into forging a path for his future. His problem was that his future was not his current career as he was learning programming by himself during the free time he had in his trading career. (Also we went into politics and talked about our neighbors across the Hong Kong border that we perhaps should not talk about in a public format.)Why did you leave a good career path behind?I was getting bored of the job. I felt at the time that I was the smartest person in the room; and it sounds kind of arrogant to say that.
I think the main issue with that is...I felt I was too young to be the smartest person in the room. I think the thing was that I started hanging out with the...I started going to the local hackerspace, Dimsum Labs, and it was the first time I saw a Hacker Space.I found that very informative because it was like, "You know something I clearly don't know about, but I am interested!"I think it was around the same time I got fascinated by Hak 5 and Udacity just started. I really wanted to learn ALL of these free courses online so I did this at work! Why does Denis Tsoi code? When did it click for you that this was the thing you wanted to continue doing this for a living? It's not really the Bootcamp that sold it for me...The learning never stopped at the end of that Bootcamp.. . .Mentioning his first step into coding by joining a Bootcamp program in Hong Kong which I highly recommend for all those who are thinking of switching fields, which takes a lot of time, but according to this witness' account is worth it.
. . .[Afterwards] I spent 3 years following someone (Vlad for previous episode #5) (/code-for-good-episode-5), who had over 10 years of experience."Teach me everything you know. Try to teach me everything you know. I want to absorb everything and see how you think"To be fair, I feel different from someone without that experience of going through this.
