Hi I’m John Grisby Professor of Practice and Managing Partner at Grey Matter Global Ltd. Welcome Leader'View (Public), where we take an innovative approach that shapes and throws new light on business/industry leadership subjects and topics, often answered by narrow, conventional and traditional perspectives. To analyse sports leadership complex subjects, topics and problems, we use a scientific model, the principles of change and problem solving to deliver unusual depth of insight on issues that are reshaping global leadership in business/industry, for example performance, management, race, directing, problem solving, gender, communications, change, politics, finance, strategy and socio-cultural (just to name a few).We are in the fourth industrial revolution environment in business/industry is characterised by complexity, change and problems. I appreciate it’s really hard to make sense of a lot of leadership subjects, problems and challenges that you might be dealing with. So in this environment there is a need for an effective tool, or approach and shared understanding to cut through all this noise and get clarity. That’s why we go 5Deep. 5Deep is a scientific model used to analyse and deliver unusual depth of insight. It interdisciplinary using the human sciences, like anthropology, sociology, psychology, science, business, behaviour and economics. It goes far deeper than the oversimplified models in business and management consulting analytical or assessment tools. To understand 5Deep analysis I want you to picture yourself in a small boat in the artic in front of a massive iceberg. On the surface level you can see ice, snow, water and whatever else an iceberg is made of. But below the surface, underneath and invisible, there is an immense mass of ice going down 150 to 200 meters. This is the essence of 5Deep analysis or going five levels deep down. All the levels below provide a foundation that supports and drives everything upwards, which results in visible actions and behaviours. In the day to day world of rapid pace and change we only go 1Deep to analyse. We simply do not have the time or capacity to make thorough in-depth analysis. 1Deep is very superficial and at this level there’s really a lack of insight. The consequence of this means you’re making decisions and solving problems based on a superficial set of information, data and assumptions - which are most likely wrong. This is dangerous. The surface level only describes WHAT is happening and HOW it acts and behaves. If you want a deeper level of understanding of what we see, hear or experience, you have to go underneath, to what’s actually driving the behaviours and actions. Going underneath 5Deep explains WHY and WHAT is driving the visible surface level action and behaviour.5Deep combines five levels of analysis to give a holistic understanding of a complex sports leadership topic, problem or challengeStarting at the deepest level from the surface is 5Deep - Life Condition Complexity. There is a saying in 5Deep analysis that ‘Context is King’. This is because Life Conditions is the starting point for ALL analysis. We need to first understand the context or environment in which something is happening - circumstance, place, time or problem. To make analysis more specific there are only seven complex Life Conditions present in human history - 1. Basic Subsistence/Survival, 2. Pre-industrial, 3. Industrial, 4. Information & Knowledge, 5. Global Technology/Finance, 6. Digital Social Network/Community, and 7. Complex/Problematic. The seven are only a general starting point. We can be much more specific and nuanced with more rich contextual information. Leaders must adapt to be effective in their specific Life Condition Complexity - which is explained by the next level 4Deep MEMIC Codes. Life Condition complexity determines what elements are necessary and important for adaptation. 4Deep MEMIC Codes are...
