“Effective communication is not about winning!  It provides an opportunity for listening with intention, and personal reflection.”

Communication Is Key

Actually, this goes without saying!  Communication is absolutely the key for growth, both between individuals and within yourself.  Today we review the importance of effective communication, and explore the tools necessary for positive outcomes with others.

The tools presented today, can be used in every day conversation, or switched on when a conflict irrupts.  The tools assume that you have an authentic intent to listen and learn from the person you are talking with.  Winning is never the goal.

Pre-Reqs For Success

There are several important considerations to walk through prior to starting an important interaction with someone else.  These include:

  1. Knowing your intention prior to an important interaction/conversation
  2. Entering the conversation with an intent to “respond,” not, “react”
  3. A commitment to a positive outcome (intimacy building and/or clarity)
  4. Entering the conversation with a commitment to understand the other person

Nitty Gritty Tools To Master

In today’s episode, I suggest that you know what you want out of an exchange before engaging.  Also, be willing to accept all possible outcomes, including knowing when to step away for a breather.  Finally, if there is a history of violence, be aware of aggressive signals and have an escape plan.

Dr. David Burns suggests several effective communication skills that should be mastered.  I provide examples in our discussion today.  These are:

  1. Disarming – Finding a grain of truth in what the other person is saying
  2. Empathy Building – Thought Empathy (paraphrasing) and Feeling Empathy (emotion reflection)
  3. Asking Questions – Open vs. Closed
  4. Personal Expression – Using “I feel” statements when appropriate

Final Thoughts

Effective communication encourages relationship growth, decreases anxiety, and improves mood.  We are biologically driven to be connected to others.  Even in the best relationships, conflicts happen, resentments go unspoken.  The tools discussed today, if master through roll play and experience, have the potential to improve your relationships and ignite your personal growth journey.

The following book has fleshed examples and worksheets based on the skills discussed today.  It is considered compulsory!
